Expired Passport UK: What to Do and How to Avoid It Happening Again

By Nudge19 March 20265 min read

An expired passport can derail travel plans and cause real stress. Here is what to do if your passport has expired, how long renewal takes, and how to make sure you never get caught out again.

Can You Travel with an Expired UK Passport?

No. An expired passport is not valid for international travel. Even if your passport expired yesterday, airlines are required to check document validity before boarding, and border control in virtually every country will refuse entry. Some countries additionally require that your passport has a minimum remaining validity, typically six months, beyond your intended departure date. This means a passport expiring within six months of your trip may also cause problems even if it has not formally expired.

Within the UK, an expired passport can still be used as a form of ID in some limited contexts, but it cannot be used to board flights or pass through e-Gates at UK airports. It is not a functional travel document.

The six-month rule

Many countries, including Morocco, Egypt, UAE, and most of Southeast Asia, require at least six months' validity on your passport on the date you enter, not the date you book. Always check FCDO travel advice for your destination.

How Long Does UK Passport Renewal Take?

The standard online renewal service typically takes around three weeks from the date your application is received. However, this is not guaranteed; during peak periods (particularly April to June, ahead of summer travel) processing can take considerably longer, and HM Passport Office advises applying at least six weeks before you need your passport.

If you need your passport more urgently, the Fast Track service offers a one-week turnaround and the Premium service offers a same-day or next-working-day turnaround, both for an additional fee. Both require you to attend in person at a Passport Customer Service Centre with your original documents. Appointment availability varies and should be checked online.

  • Standard online renewal: approximately 3 weeks (apply at least 6 weeks before travel)
  • Fast Track (1 week): in-person appointment at a Passport Customer Service Centre required
  • Premium (same day or next working day): in-person appointment required at select locations
  • Check current processing times at gov.uk/apply-renew-passport before applying
  • Children's passports are valid for 5 years; adult passports are valid for 10 years

What to Do If Your Passport Has Just Expired

If you have a trip booked and your passport has recently expired, your options depend on your timeline. With three or more weeks to go, apply online immediately using the standard service. Gather everything you need before starting: your most recent passport, a digital photo meeting the government's strict specifications, and your card for the fee (currently £82.50 for an adult passport; check gov.uk for the current fee).

With less than three weeks to go, you will need to book a Premium or Fast Track appointment. Appointments at Passport Customer Service Centres in major cities can be booked online. Demand for short-notice appointments is high; check availability early in the morning when new slots are often released.

The 10-Year Gap Problem

Adult UK passports are valid for 10 years. Ten years is a long time, and it is not surprising that many people do not actively track when their passport expires. The passport simply lives in a drawer until the next time it is needed, which is often when travel has already been booked and the discovery of an expired document creates real urgency.

The solution is straightforward: treat your passport expiry date like any other important deadline. Most passport holders are best served by setting a reminder at the nine-year mark; this gives a full year of advance notice and removes all urgency from the renewal process.

Other UK Documents That Expire and Are Easily Forgotten

  • UK photocard driving licence (photocard): expires every 10 years
  • UK photocard driving licence (driving entitlement): expires at age 70, then every 3 years
  • Biometric Residence Permit (BRP): fixed expiry date matching your visa leave
  • EHIC / GHIC card: 5-year validity
  • DBS certificate: not formally time-limited but most employers require a check within 3 years
